Aviation in Arizona Soars
Arizona’s aviation industry contributes $38.5 billion to the economy and more than 470,000 jobs, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. From travel and tourism to aerospace manufacturing and commercial aviation, Arizona’s expertise is extensive.
Arizona has 81 airports throughout the state, including three international airports. Greater Phoenix’s Civil Aviation facilities – Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, PHX Goodyear and PHX Deer Valley – account for more than 305,000 jobs and $33 billion in economic impact for Arizona.
Twenty-three carriers account for Sky Harbor’s 1,400 daily arrivals and departures, and the transport of approximately 855 tons of cargo, making Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport the state’s largest aviation facility. Sky Harbor alone employs more than 33,000 Arizonans and generates $8.2 billion in revenues. Tucson International Airport, employing nearly 13,000 Arizonans, and Yuma International Airport account for another 200 flights daily. Yuma Airport has unparalleled military ties, and is home to one of the country’s most prestigious new defense aviation parks – the 120-acre Defense Contractor Complex (DCC). It’s located near the airport and Yuma Proving Grounds, and supports defense contractors from Boeing and other firms by providing a secure space to complete technical activities.
Two former military bases also serve Arizona’s commercial aviation industry. The largest, Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, is a growing reliever airport to Sky Harbor, boasting a newly remodeled passenger terminal, convenient parking and three expansive runways (10,401 feet; 10,201 feet; and 9,301 feet). Designated as a Foreign Trade Zone No. 221 and a Military Reuse Zone, and having expertise in aircraft maintenance, modification, testing and pilot training, Gateway offers global-minded companies a financial edge and is quickly developing as an international aerospace center.
The Phoenix Goodyear Airport is another general aviation reliever airport for Sky Harbor. It also serves air carrier companies and military aircraft on its 789-acre site. The airport was originally built and operated by the United States Navy. The airport is 2.2 miles south of Interstate 10 on Litchfield Road.
